Flea treatments - why so much choice?

Many of the leading pharmaceutical manufacturers have brought out their own branded spot on flea treatments.  Although many people recognise market leader Frontline Spot On, other variations are now available and many are identical in the ingredients they contain and how they work.
When a specific pharmaceutical company develops and patents a new drug, they are allowed exclusive rights to sell that drug for a period of time.  When the patent expires other companies can then market their own products that use that drug.  Since the generic companies don’t have the research and development costs their costs and selling price is of their product is often lower.
The recognised ingredient for most spot on flea treatments is fipronil which is safe for use in dogs and cats and is effective against fleas and ticks with rapid action.  Fipronil recently became available for generic use.  The original patent holder, Merial, produced an excellent flea product ‘Frontline’ that has been a popular choice for many years.  So now there are many other generic fipronil based flea treatments available which will protect your pet the same but cost less.
Pet Dispensary offers a range of Fipronil based veterinary flea treatments including the latest edition and cheapest product Eliminall along with Frontline Spot On, Effipro, Flevox, Fiprodog, Fiprocat and Fiprospot.
