Its not too late to help your pet cope with Bonfire night

Bonfire night may be around the corner but it is not too late to get your home prepared for your frightened pet. Pet Dispensary has some helpful advice.

Plugging in an Adaptil diffuser will help reduce your dog's noise fears. Adaptil contains the natural pheromone the mother dog produces to comfort it's young. Adaptil is the only product proven to reduce the intensity of fear felt by a dog during firework exposure. Plugging in an Adaptil diffuser or fitting an Adaptil Collar can help comfort your dog during fireworks.

Although cats rarely show if they are fearful of fireworks, keeping them indoors can cause them to become upset and show unwanted behaviour such as spraying, scratching and intercat tension. Feliway for cats contains a copy of the facial pheromone cats use when they feel safe in the home. Feliway has been proven to prevent unwanted behaviour in cats and is recommended by veterinary centres and behaviourists.

Top Tips for Dogs

Before the event

* Prepare a den for your dog in their favourite place.
* Plug in an Adaptil Diffuser near the den and provide your dog with toys and treats.

On the day of the event

* Walk your dog before dusk. This reduces the likelihood of fireworks being let off.
* Provide distractions such as a new chew or toy. Close curtains and put the TV or music on to mask the sound of fireworks.
* Don't punish your dog when he is scared.
* IMPORTANT Ignore any fearful behaviour such as panting, shaking and whining, this will only make your dog more distressed.
* Try not to leave your dog alone when fireworks are going off. Keep your routine as normal as possible.

After the event

* Leave the Adaptil Diffuser plugged in for at least a week.
* Behavioural therapy may be required once the firework season is over.

Top Tips for Cats

* Ensure your cat is inside the house and windows and doors are shut to prevent your cat from escaping. Don't forget to get your cat a litter tray!
* Close curtains and put the TV or some music on to mask the noise of fireworks.
* Wherever your cat chooses to hide leave them well alone until they feel safe to come out.
* Stay calm and act normally, do not punish or fuss your cat during the event.
